Postdoctoral Fellows Parental Leave FAQ
Question
Am I eligible for the postdoctoral fellow's parental leave benefit?
Answer
Postdoctoral Fellows employed in a University of Utah Postdoctoral Fellows job code are eligible for this benefit.
Please check with your department if you are unsure what your job code is.
Question
Are both birth parents and non‐birthing parents eligible for the Postdoctoral Fellows Parental Leave benefit?
Answer
Yes. If both parents are University of Utah employees, they must apply separately for leave under this Rule.
Question
Are there other options besides taking eight weeks of full‐time leave?
Answer
Yes. Work with your faculty advisor to arrange leave in the way that suits you best. You can take 8 consecutive weeks of full-time leave, 16 weeks of half-time leave, or a combination of both. The maximum amount of leave is 8 weeks and must be taken within 12 months of the child's arrival.
Question
Am I eligible for FMLA in addition to Postdoctoral Fellows Parental Leave?
Answer
Postdoctoral Fellows Parental Leave may run concurrently with FMLA. After taking 8 weeks of Parental Leave, you may still be eligible for 4 weeks of unpaid FMLA leave. To pursue this option, check with your HR representative and apply separately for FMLA leave through HR.
Question
What if my department offers more than eight weeks of leave?
Answer
A Postdoctoral Fellow is eligible for 8 weeks of paid Parental Leave under this rule, but departments may offer more leave. You can take the Postdoctoral Fellows Parental Leave and additional leave from your department if available.
You must apply separately for any additional leave through your department.
